Cat Power sings another song you might like, in a Diamond commercial. It’s a cover of Cat Stevens’ song, ‘How Can I Tell You.’

You can find a lot of information about music used in commercials on AdTunes, if you’re so inclined.

Love Wins. Case Study: Santa Claus

20 12 2007

This article gets to the truth of what makes great businesses and their websites so exceptional. I don’t really know why they love Santa Claus so much, but I’m glad that they do.

Link Building Case Study: Santa Claus – Search Engine Watch

Why would people work so hard to create the best Santa Claus Web site year after year and likely make little to no money? The only answer can be love. They love Christmas and they love Santa.

Because they love it so much, what seems like an insurmountable obstacle for all of us in the business world is done without a second thought for the people at northpole.com.

Vincent Gallo in Belvedere Vodka Commercial

17 12 2007

I mass-text invited friends to our Ugly Christmas Sweater Party last Friday, and got a message back from someone saying, “Going to see Vincent Gallo!”

Who the heck is Vincent Gallo? The guy in this commercial:

I like the commercial, too. It’s a new take on the “crazy fancy party” theme. A little messier. And it’s still hot.

Gotta see Buffalo 66 now …

ADWEEK: New Medium Invasion

If you haven’t met Justin Sailor yet, just wait. He gets around. We met through the Snowboard Club at Michigan State University. He was a big influence in my college career, supporting my photography, writing, and obsession with The Smashing Pumpkins. Then we graduated, and he created The Hometown Invasion Tour

Art & Commerce: Sponsorship Drive: by Justin Sailor

There is indeed a group of young, innovative and talented people who are jumping into a niche which advertisers are only beginning to embrace …

… I found myself walking into the headquarters of BBDO Detroit, seeking sponsorship from one of the largest automobile companies in the world. I pitched my big idea: visit all 50 states in one calendar year while staying with people I had never met.

Jeep accepted my project, and gave me a 2007 Jeep Compass for the road. Rather than a 15-second commercial, they were able to send someone out for an entire year with a vehicle wrapped in graphics that received constant stares on highways across the country.

A great opportunity for Jeep, how could they refuse? He had to give the Jeep back, but I think a lot more of them now that they’re taking advantage of new and innovative ways to advertise. I agree with Justin – This is the way of the future, and anything less is going to die a slow, boring death because no one will care.

Can’t wait to see what he’s up to next.

A Suburban Sprawl Christmas

11 12 2007

‘Twas the night before Tuesday, a while before Christmas, when I blogged about the annual Suburban Sprawl Holiday Sampler.

Suburban Sprawl is a friend-made music label in Southeast Michigan. They live here on the internet, and that is also the place to download all of the songs on the sampler, for free. I joined The Next Door Neighbors on clarinet for the song Bah Hum Bug.

Merry Almost Christmas!

Yellowpages Mellowpages

10 12 2007

You want a pizza. So, you pick up the phone book and leaf through its tender pages for a pizza shop. You call the first one, AAAmazing Slices or something like that, and order 10 pizzas.

NOT!

Nobody uses the phonebook anymore, and it doesn’t matter if the pizza company is called AAmazing Slice or ZZZany Sauce Inc, because alphabetical order is old news.

Phonebooks are dying, but if I had to make a commercial for one, I would want it to be as cool as this:

There are black frogs in Australia, which makes this especially relevant to that market. Interesting.

Cindy Crawford – Art Van Furniture

7 12 2007

Cindy has this package deal, where furniture companies can buy her furniture line. A commercial comes with it. They give you footage, you hack it up however you please … ( Cindy’s people re-approve it), and then you stick your logo on top. Her people will also send you a recording of her saying the name of your furniture company, “Only at XYZ Company!”

Someone seems to have recorded a TV screen – they must have really liked this spot. I helped piece it together for Art Van Furniture, earlier this summer. Her line is something you’d expect to find in your grandparents’ den or library, to be honest.

Product in ‘Shot’

6 12 2007

Recently, I happened upon the first episode of “The Shot,” and had to watch the whole thing. The premise is 10 wannabe fashion photographers, living in a modern loft, competing reality-style on two teams of five.

I noticed product placement for HP and Canon, with a Victoria’s Secret model and Marie Claire fashion editor of some kind, all getting their brands in there.
