‘Visit California’ Commercials

18 03 2008

Does California really need to advertise? Really? I thought they were already stealing cool people from the other 49 states.

What about an awesome commercial from Idaho, or Montana? Some great ad agency should pick up on that idea, like Sufjan Stevens’ idea to write an album about every state.

California could have a problem, though. NPR says their housing market is terrible, and foreclosures are ravaging the southern part of the state. They should fix that. Maybe the same people who love these commercials, full of cheesy puns, will love buying those houses.

Cupcakes, Bunnies, Sedaris and Microsoft

14 02 2008

While on Facebook today, (I talk about Facebook too much) I watched this spot for Microsoft Office. I didn’t care that it was an ad. It was adorable and interesting.

I LOVE BUNNIES.

Thinnovation!

17 01 2008
macbook air

I am intrigued and skeptical of the new MacBook Air. I don’t have a problem with the weight or thickness of my current mac (iBook G4) … but can’t help wondering what new personality the internet will have on something so new and tiny. New and tiny, like a baby. Maybe I will see the internet like a baby, too, free of preconceptions. Maybe I would discover great Truths and solve the problems of the world. Maybe I will write the Great American Novel on it.

Whatever happens, here’s an article on NOTCOT:

MacBook Air NOTCOT

I’m going to be sad if I open the box for this and it’s not in a manilla envelope … It’s just like a ginormous ipod…
Update! Check this out. You can buy a real protective sleeve/case that looks like a manila envelope:

Pitchfork: YACHT Designs Clever Sleeves for New MacBook Air
Taking to heart Steve Jobs’ claim that the MacBook Air will fit in a standard manila business envelope (seeing is believing), Bechtolt and frequent collaborator Claire L. Evans devised the perfect accessory: the manila envelope-styled protective laptop sleeve (pictured above). The pair readily admits it’s an “obvious” idea, but who cares when it’s also probably a massively lucrative one?

Songs in Diamond Commercials

Landon Pigg sings the song you probably like, in one of the A Diamond Is Forever TV commercials.

Right-click on the picture and save to download it, if you want to.

Cat Power sings another song you might like, in a Diamond commercial. It’s a cover of Cat Stevens’ song, ‘How Can I Tell You.’

You can find a lot of information about music used in commercials on AdTunes, if you’re so inclined.

Other Commercial Tunes to Dig:

  • Check out this Vicks commercial featuring Anathallo, a Michigan-made band.
  • Check out this Old Navy commercial featuring The Weepies. (People who look good in metallic jeans never shop at Old Navy.)

Vincent Gallo in Belvedere Vodka Commercial

17 12 2007

I mass-text invited friends to our Ugly Christmas Sweater Party last Friday, and got a message back from someone saying, “Going to see Vincent Gallo!”

Who the heck is Vincent Gallo? The guy in this commercial:

I like the commercial, too. It’s a new take on the “crazy fancy party” theme. A little messier. And it’s still hot.

Gotta see Buffalo 66 now …

Yellowpages Mellowpages

10 12 2007

You want a pizza. So, you pick up the phone book and leaf through its tender pages for a pizza shop. You call the first one, AAAmazing Slices or something like that, and order 10 pizzas.

NOT!

Nobody uses the phonebook anymore, and it doesn’t matter if the pizza company is called AAmazing Slice or ZZZany Sauce Inc, because alphabetical order is old news.

Phonebooks are dying, but if I had to make a commercial for one, I would want it to be as cool as this:

There are black frogs in Australia, which makes this especially relevant to that market. Interesting.
